Material Hoist at Job Sites
In recent times, we came across ample of accidents occurring with the material hoists in the construction sites.
On day-to-day basis we are also prone to such incidents at job sites.
What is Hoist???
Hoists are generally used in construction sites to transfer goods and/or materials between the ground and elevated floors of a multi-level structure. A hoist system comprises a car, mast tower, mast ties, base / landing systems and a drive unit.
Different Types of Hoists:
- Material hoist
- Passenger hoist
- Boom hoist
- Platform hoist
- Bucket hoist etc.,
Operating hoists can present a risk of injury to people from the following:
- Hoist collapse: This can occur due to the failure of the mast structure or if the hoist is not adequately secured to the supporting structure.
- Contact or collision with other structures: This can occur when sufficient clearances are not maintained between where the hoist car will travel and other structures.
- Contact with moving parts: This can occur where any part of a person’s body is able to access moving parts of a hoist system, including at the base and at all landing areas.
- Fall of person from height: This can occur during activities associated with shifting of materials from the unsecured landing area.
Things to remember:
- Personnel movement / travel in the material hoist or any type of hoist used at construction sites is strictly prohibited.
- In construction site, use the hoists to shift only the materials if required & permitted.
- Use only the staircase to reach the desired work locations and shift the materials accordingly.
- Load the materials in the hoist with in the specified rated load & secure the load properly.
- Ensure no movement of personnel under the hoist.
