Hazards & Controls while working at top of elevator car
HAZARDS:
- Falling hazard (fall of object, Falling into the lift pit)
- Being hit or caught up by moving equipment on in unguarded adjacent hoistways (s).
- Being catch in the nip point on unguarded moving sheave (S), Pulleys, Belt on the car top.
- Being hit or caught by moving car, moving counterweight and stationary object in hoist way.
- Tripping and falling hazard due to unexpectedly moving of the elevator or obstacle on car top e.g. scattered tools, material and wiring chords.
- Electric shock.
CONTROLS:
- Always put the elevator in inspection mode when on car top.
- If inspection control on car top does not work correctly, turn the car to inspection mode from controller and rectify the erratic circuit before doing any further work from car top.
- Check that the top of car stop button, inspection switch and direction buttons cannot be accidently knocked or unintentionally activated.
- Do not wear loose clothing, hanging or hand jewellery while working on car top, these could get caught in the hoist-way accessories and cause an injury.
- Always wear Full Body Harness anchored with top yoke;
- Do not enter over the car tops ‘without guard rail/barricade.
- If gap between hoist way wall and car top edge is more than 300 mm on any side ensure cartop barricades are installed .
- Adjust the free length of lanyard equal to reach the farthest end of car top edge and Inspection board.
- Be aware of distance & position of elevator car and counterweight in adjacent unscreened shafts.
- Be aware of obstructions in the hoistway. These could be static, such as trimmer beams, or moving, such as the counterweight.
- Be aware of unguarded moving equipment on car top e.g. sheaves, ropes, cabin fan, door operator pulley and belt…
- Locate yourself on car top front and / or rear side from where all switches and buttons of inspection box are accessible and operated without extra stress to your body and exposing your body parts to moving elements
- Always turn off the stop switch on the car top before working on equipment.
- Maintain unobstructed access to the Stop switch and Inspection board.
- Only two persons are allowed to work on the car top. Always stay near the center of the car when the lift is moving unless your specific work requires you to be away from the center.
- Check everybody and everything is clear before moving lift.
- Clearly state the intended direction of travel to your co-worker, move the car only when your indication is received by him and every individual involved in work.
- Do not lean over or let anything projected from the car top or into an adjacent shaft.
- Do not lean, stand, travel or erect temporary work stands on guardrails.
- Always stay away well clear of the empty space next to or behind the car top edge were counterweight travels?
- Be aware of the empty space next to or behind the elevator car where the counterweight travels, and stay well clear of this space.
- Never assume that turning off the safety switch will isolate the circuit of the item you are working on.
- The safety switch is designed to stop the elevator, not to isolate every electric circuit. The circuit may have to be isolated by switching off the Main Switch or MCB in the Machine / Motor room. Test it before you touch it.
- Ensure that all site personnel must follow the safety procedure of getting on and off the top of the car.
- It only takes one simple fault and the consequences can be deadly.
- Never move the car up or down even in Inspection mode/control or otherwise with OPEN DOOR.
