Fall of Material / Falling Object hazards

You are at risk from falling objects when you are beneath equipment, scaffolds, etc., or where overhead work is being performed. There is a danger from flying objects when power tools, or activities like civil work, working on height, pulling, pushing may cause objects to become airborne. Injuries can range from minor abrasions to concussions, blindness, or death.

Falling Objects: All objects that could fall or be dropped from a higher level (e.g. Top floor, roof, workplace, store etc.) and injure people. The most common injuries workers suffer from falling objects are bruises, fractures, strains, sprains and could be serious & fatal.

How to Avoid Hazards?

  1. Conduct Job Hazards Analysis (JHA) & Toolbox Talk (TBT) before starting work
  2. Wear hardhats / bump cap while entering on jobsite.
  3. Stack materials properly to prevent sliding, falling, or collapse.
  4. Use protective measures such as toe boards, barricades and signs, overhead protection, covering of all openings.

Hand & Power Tools, Machines, etc.

  1. Use safety glasses, goggles, face shields, etc., where machines or tools may cause flying particles.
  2. Do not lean equipment against the wall such as scaffolds parts, ladders, stilts etc
  3. Inspect tools, to ensure that protective guards are in good condition.
  4. Make sure you are trained in the proper operation of power actuated tools.

Cranes/Elevated Equipment and Hoists

  1. Avoid working underneath loads being moved.
  2. Barricade hazard areas and post warning signs.
  3. Inspect work areas for potential falling objects to see that all components, such as electrical conduit, wire, pipes, light fixtures, demolition work, etc.
  4. Do not exceed lifting capacity of Elevating Working Platforms.

Overhead Work

  1. Do not leave tools unattended on top of ladders, equipment or places such as metal studs, framing structure where the tool and other material can fall.
  2. Do not lean material such as metal studs, drywall, wood or anything that can become unstable and fall.
  3. Secure tools and materials to prevent them from falling on people below.
  4. Barricade hazard areas and post warning signs.
  5. Use toe boards, screens, or guardrails on scaffolds to prevent falling objects.
  6. Use catch platforms, or canopies to catch or deflect falling objects.
  7. Proper supervision and coordination with customer and subcon at jobsite
  8. Working in two levels are not allowed
  9. Safety Net must be used as per standard requirement.
