- Treat every cylinder as “full” and handle carefully.
- Compressed gas cylinders must be handled with care and treated like a bomb.
- Ensure valve is closed completely and cylinders were caped.
- Large cylinders weigh up to 75 kilograms, or 160 pounds.
- A minimum of two employees are required to hand carry cylinders
- Always use carrier and secure the cylinder into it.
- Cylinders should not be stored or left in confined space. It must be stored in shaded and well ventilated area.
- Cylinders should be stored upright on stable dry surface, and secured to prevent cylinder from falling over.
- Always secure acetylene cylinders in an upright position both in use and in storage.
- Store like gas with like gas, separate empty cylinders from full ones with proper labeling for all, and to be stored and used on first-in, first-out basis.
- Operate in accordance with up dated procedures, keep it away from direct sunlight, heat, flam and electricity.
- Cylinders and regulators should be inspected before use for damage, accurate gauges, no dents, corrosion or cracks, etc.
- Cylinders should never be placed in use while laying on it‟s side. Cylinders in use should be secured in an upright position.
- When moving cylinders, use a cart or trolley. Never transport using slings or electro-magnetic lifts or roll cylinders on the ground.
- Never oil or grease cylinder valves, regulators and/or any part of the used system.
- Keep them away from sun, artificial heat, flammable materials, corrosive chemicals and fumes.
- Avoid damage to valves and fittings. Do not use them for lifting or carrying.
- Keep valves and fittings of oxygen cylinders free from oil and grease.
- See that gloves (if worn) are free from oil and grease.
- Open cylinder valves slowly, and close sufficiently to shut off gas- never use force.
- Always lift cylinders from trucks- do not drop or slide them
- Keep hose lines clear of traffic lanes.
- Remember- handling cylinders is a two man job.
- Always use a cap when transporting cylinders.
COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDERS

- Always use a bottle trolley and secure the cylinder into it.
- Always secure acetylene cylinders in an upright position both in use and in storage.
- Store ALL cylinders so that they cannot fall.
- Keep them away from sun, artificial heat, flammable materials, corrosive chemicals, and fumes.
- Avoid damage to valves and fittings. Do not use them for lifting or carrying.
- Keep valves and fittings of oxygen cylinders free from oil and grease. Ensure flash back arrestors are fitted between cylinder and hose.
- Open cylinder valves slowly and close sufficiently to shut off gas - never use force.
- Always lift cylinders from trucks - do not drop or slide them.
- Keep hose lines clear of traffic lanes, ensure your hoses are in good condition.
- Always have a fire extinguisher with you when working with cutting, burning, welding equipment.
- Get a Hot Work Permit from approver before starting work.
- Return all cylinders to the storage area when the work is finished.
- Remember, handling cylinders is a 2-man job.
