Confined Space - Work Permit

Confined Space refers to any place, including any vessel, tank, container, pit, bund, chamber, cellar or any other similar space which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, creates conditions that give rise to a likelihood of an accident, harm or injury of such a nature as to require emergency action due to the presence or reasonable foreseeable presence of:

  • Flammable or explosive atmospheres
  • Harmful gas, fume or vapour
  • Free flowing solid or an increasing level of liquid
  • Excess of oxygen
  • Excessively high temperature
  • Lack or reasonably foreseeable lack of oxygen

The permit should document a thorough assessment of potential hazards in the confined space, such as atmospheric hazards (e.g., oxygen deficiency, flammable gases), engulfment, or entrapment.

Here are the categories permit :

1. Non-Permit Required Confined Spaces

Spaces that do not contain any known hazards, such as atmospheric hazards, physical hazards, or other recognized serious safety or health hazards.

2. Permit-Required Confined Spaces (PRCS)

Spaces that contain one or more of the following hazards:

  • Atmospheric hazards (e.g., oxygen deficiency, flammable gases)
  • Physical hazards (e.g., falling objects, entanglement)
  • Other recognized serious safety or health hazards (e.g., toxic substances, electrical hazards)

3. Hazardous Confined Spaces

Spaces that contain one or more of the following hazards:

  • Explosive or flammable atmospheres
  • Toxic or corrosive substances
  • High temperatures or radiation
  • Falling objects or entanglement hazards

4. Isolated Confined Spaces

Spaces that are isolated from other areas and do not have a direct connection to the outside atmosphere.

5. Enclosed Confined Spaces

Spaces that are fully enclosed and do not have any openings or connections to the outside atmosphere.

6. Continuous-Process Confined Spaces

Spaces that are part of a continuous process, such as pipes, tanks, or vessels.
