- Maharashtra: The primary legislation is the Maharashtra Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks Act, 2017, which revised the older Bombay Lift Act, 1939.
- Delhi: Governed by the Delhi Lift Rules, 1942, which were formulated under the parent "The Bombay Lift Act, 1939".
- West Bengal: Regulated by the West Bengal Lifts and Escalators Act, 1955 and the more recent West Bengal Lifts, Escalators and Travelators Act, 2019.
- Tamil Nadu: Governed by the Tamil Nadu Lift and Escalators Act, 1997.

A new comprehensive safety code, IS 17900, is set to replace older codes from December 2025. (Indian Standards (IS): IS 14665 (Parts 1-5) for electric lifts, IS 15785 for MRL lifts, IS 14671 for hydraulic lifts, and IS 17491 for existing lifts (SNEL))
