ELEVATOR SAFETY  – HOISTWAY LIGHTING

ALWAYS verify the presence of the car prior to accessing the hoistway. This includes opening the hoistway door no more than 15 cm until you visually verify the presence of the car.

To further help ensure employees are safely accessing elevator cars and car tops:

• On all service and repair projects all field personnel must leave the elevator car lights and car top lights on at ALL times when performing work in the hoistway. These lights must remain on until the work is completed and the car is returned to service.  This includes leaving lights on when leaving for lunch and shift change.
• On all construction and modernization operations, lights must remain illuminated at ALL times until the project is completed.
• For operational cars used for service on construction projects, all car, car top and pit lights must remain on at all times.
• If accessing a car, the hoistway doors should be opened no more than 15 cm and held to verify that the car is present. Once the presence of the car has been verified, the doors can then be fully opened.
• If accessing the car top, the switch should first be pulled; doors should be closed, and then reopened after a call has been placed without the car moving.  Before stepping onto the car top, mechanically block the hoistway doors and ensure the following steps have been taken:
• Turn on the car top light.
• Place the top of car switch in “STOP” and test to verify.
• Place the inspection switch in “INSPECT” position and test.
• These tests must be performed independently.
